Liposuction Q & A
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a form of cosmetic surgery that improves your body’s shape by removing stubborn, localized pockets of fat. The experienced team at Meridian Plastic Surgery uses liposuction to contour and shape many body parts, including the:
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Hips
- Abdomen
- Upper arms
- Back
- Cheeks, chin, and neck
- Calves and ankles
To help you achieve your aesthetic goals, the team may suggest combining your liposuction with other procedures, such as a facelift or breast reduction surgery.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
The team at Meridian Plastic Surgery determines if you’re a good candidate for liposuction during a consultation. Though liposuction removes excess body fat, it’s not a weight-loss procedure. To be considered a good candidate for cosmetic surgery, you must:
- Be within 30% of your ideal body weight
- Have firm, resilient skin and good muscle tone
- Be in good health
- Be a nonsmoker
- Have realistic expectations
If you’re troubled by stubborn pockets of fat that seem to resist your healthy diet and consistent workout program, then you should contact Meridian Plastic Surgery to see if liposuction is right for you.
In addition to surgical removal of excess body fat, Meridian Plastic Surgery also offers a nonsurgical option to get rid of unwanted fat with CoolSculpting®.
What happens during liposuction?
During your liposuction, your plastic surgeon inserts a thin plastic tube, referred to as a cannula, through small incisions in your skin. Your surgeon then uses the cannula to loosen the fat and suction it out with a surgical vacuum attached to the cannula. To ease discomfort, your liposuction is performed under anesthesia.
The length of your procedure may depend on the number of body parts undergoing liposuction treatment. The team reviews the specifics of your treatment plan during your consultation so you know how to prepare, the details of your procedure, and what to expect after.
After your liposuction, you’re sent to the recovery room and closely monitored and then home when you’re stable. You may need a few days of rest before returning to work and the team may suggest you avoid strenuous activity, including your workout, for a few weeks during your recovery period.
How long does it take to see results from liposuction?
You should see an improvement in your figure immediately after the procedure, despite the swelling. As your swelling subsides, you should notice further improvement within 4-6 weeks and optimal results at three months.
